10 Best Skin-Tightening Creams to Tackle Tech Neck and Beyond

While an in-office procedure is the only way to physically tighten your skin, the best skin-tightening creams provide a hardworking dose of sag-reducing active ingredients such as retinoids, peptides, and vitamin C. With all skin care, consistency is key to seeing the best results, like improving skin laxity. (Again, said results won’t reach those of surgical levels, but will still be noticeable!) Just ask Heather Woolery-Lloyd, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Miami. “When it comes to topicals, we can see improvement in fine lines and textural changes with consistent use [of creams],” she notes.

Like Dr. Woolery-Lloyd’s professionally administered treatments, these creams also encourage collagen production to firm and smooth skin, lending it that “tighter” look over time. Sure, they take a little longer to deliver subtler results, but they’re a serious upgrade from your usual moisturizer if you’re dealing with crepey or sagging skin and act as a preventative measure for stalling said concerns from developing further. We tapped editors and board-certified dermatologists to break down how these creams work—and what makes their favorites stand out.

Why it's worth it: SkinCeuticals' A.G.E. Interruptor Advanced is one of our favorite moisturizers for mature skin for its nourishing, balm-like feel that complements other active-packed serums. The key plumping ingredient is Proxylane, the brand’s proprietary post-biotic ferment extract. It boosts your skin’s natural levels of hydrating complex sugars, called glycan, for dewier, suppler skin. The formula also uses antioxidant-rich blueberry extract to offset the skin's decline in collagen, which can occur from aging and sun exposure. New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, calls this formula a "great, thicker cream that provides improvement for age-related changes, as well as hydration." Because this moisturizes skin and doesn't contain actives, you can pair it with retinoids at night for a cell-turnover, fine-line-smoothing boost. It can also extend the results of in-office tightening treatments, like radio-frequency and ultrasound.

“In the daytime, my combo skin and I adore a lightweight gel-cream, but come nighttime, I reach for a thicker cream that creates a strong seal for all of the essences and serums I slather on. SkinCeuticals' A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced is one of the all-timers—it's rich but not overly heavy, a.k.a. it melts into my skin quickly. I especially love that it's targeted towards fine lines because, while I'm not considered mature yet, I've been seeing more faint forehead lines pop up and I want to do everything in my power (even though aging is a blessing!) to maintain elasticity and glow. A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced is the perfect nightcap, hard stop.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it's worth it: It’s easy for firming creams to simply flood the skin with moisture to temporarily create a smoother look, but Medik8’s Advanced Pro-Collagen+ Peptide Cream gets to work underneath the surface, helping your skin rebuild itself rather than just masking fine lines. “This cream firms the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin over time, supporting skin recovery, and defending against collagen damage. The patented Growth Factor MiniProtein mimics your skin’s natural growth factors, and its ultra-small size allows it to penetrate more effectively,” says Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. If you’re noticing more lines or that your skin isn’t quite as springy as it used to be, this cream delivers the kind of collagen-supporting power that, with consistent use, helps skin look bouncier and more resilient.

The finish is really satin-y, absorbs quickly (a through line with Medik8, I'll always award bonus points for speedy application), and I really feel like my skin texture and tone have never been better.” —Sarah Hoffmann, commerce producer

Why it's worth it: Smoothing and firming the delicate neck and chest areas isn’t something more topical creams can easily pull off, but Alastin Skincare Restorative Neck Complex Hydrating Lotion uses a patented peptide blend to get the job done. “It’s designed with TriHex Technology and antioxidants to firm, hydrate, improve elasticity, and reduce discoloration due to sun damage,” says Morayo Adisa, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Chicago, Illinois. The fast-absorbing formula helps clear out damaged collagen and elastin, making room for healthier new fibers. And if you have uneven skin tone, you’re in luck: "The addition of phyto-antioxidants, along with the inclusion of niacinamide, allows this formula to improve hyperpigmentation," adds Quynh-Giao Sartor, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Houston, Texas. The lightweight texture feels more like a serum than a cream, making it easy to smooth one pump from jawline to décolleté.

Why it's worth it: The Isdin Isdinceutics Age Contour Night Face Moisturizer may not lean on aggressive actives, but it still does an impressive job at boosting elasticity and delivering results similar to stronger formulas. This face cream swaps the harsher add-ins for hydrating hyaluronic acid and curry plant extract, which is rich in moisture-sealing antioxidants for all-around softer, bouncier skin by morning. Isdin’s night cream is also infused with carnosine, an anti-inflammatory amino acid that can help depuff swollen under-eyes. Ava Shamban, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Los Angeles, says this combination of hydrating and firming ingredients increases the volume of your skin, making it appear fuller, and compares the effect to a sponge that goes from dry to damp. "When wet, the sponge expands to occupy more space, giving a plumping effect," Dr. Shamban explains.

Firm & Tone Lotion for Body

Why it's worth it: When 96% of your skin is on your body, it deserves just as much attention as your face—especially because body skin is thicker, less oily, and often slower to repair itself, making it more prone to laxity. SkinMedica’s Firm & Tone Lotion makes a compelling case for giving it extra TLC if you’re noticing sagginess from the neck down. “It includes green microalgae and shitake mushroom extracts to support collagen and elastin production, ginger root extract and grapefruit peel oil for antioxidant defense, and coffee arabica seed oil to help improve skin elasticity and firmness,” says Jane Yoo, MD, a dual board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, who considers it a good body cream for anyone concerned about crepiness. It also contains caffeine (which offers a temporary tightening effect by constricting blood vessels) to help skin look noticeably more lifted.

Why it's worth it: K-beauty brands have long understood the assignment: If you want to stick to a routine, the product has to feel so good that you want to put it on. The smooth, almost whipped texture of Sulwhasoo’s Essential Firming Cream EX is exactly that—plush, comforting, and instantly rewarding. “As a Korean-American dermatologist and K-beauty lover, I cannot mention skin-tightening creams without mentioning this Sulwhasoo cream. The texture is luxurious and does double duty in hydrating while smoothing out saggy skin,” says Dr. Yoo, who adds that you can see noticeable improvements in skin texture and fine lines with continued use. With its proprietary blend of traditional Korean herb extracts (peony, lotus seed, white lily, rehmannia, and Solomon’s seal), plus adenosine and squalane to keep skin springy and improve elasticity, it’s a sensorial step that also delivers real firming perks.

Why it's worth it: “Slow aging” is one of K-beauty’s key principles: Instead of chasing dramatic quick fixes, you support your skin’s longevity through gentle actives, barrier care, and consistency. Bioheal’s Probioderm 3D Lifting Cream aligns with that philosophy through its probiotic-rich Probioderm complex—featuring lactobacillus ferment lysate and prebiotic sugars—which helps strengthen the skin barrier, in turn improving firmness and elasticity. “It also includes a deeply hydrating 17-peptide complex, which rejuvenates the skin and enhances elasticity,” says Dr. Yoo. With adenosine, beta-glucan, and meadowfoam seed oil in the mix, it’s a lifting cream that’s all about long-term skin health. “It has a non-greasy texture that easily absorbs on contact, not to mention a really delightful smell,” she says.

Why it’s worth it: Because we lose about 1% of collagen each year and elastin declines even faster, the jawline—which relies heavily on those structural proteins—naturally starts to soften. So, if your jaw and neck areas are looking a bit less defined than they used to, StriVectin’s Contour Restore Tightening & Sculpting Face Cream is one of the most targeted options out there. “If you have concerns about sagging skin around the jawline and downward cheek folds, the formula targets skin laxity specifically with a combination of elastin-targeting peptides, thyme extract liposomes, and glycolipids that work together to tighten and lift the skin,” says Corey L. "Retinoids like this one can even out skin tone, increase collagen production, and even treat acne and acne scarring," says Angelo Landriscina, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. Peptides function as a gentler alternative to retinol, making Neocutis's Bio Serum Firm a great bet for people looking for an easygoing but still effective option. Neocutis Bio Serum Firm "contains a blend of proprietary peptides and human growth factors, as well as hyaluronic acid to restore skin hydration and boost collagen," says Dr. Chang. It's the growth factors that make this formula unique: They encourage cells to revive their skin cell functions, like cell turnover and collagen production, making this a great pick for anyone with irritated skin or a disrupted skin barrier.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a cream that really tightens skin?

Again, a firming cream can help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and improve elasticity—as in, giving skin some bounce and suppleness—but no topical formula can actually tighten skin, which requires collagen remodeling on a much deeper level.

Still, certain ingredients can help, with retinoids being among the best. These are "vitamin A derivatives that can increase skin cell turnover and stimulate collagen," says Dr. Chang. "Retinoids have been shown to clinically reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin texture and complexion." Sensitive skin types should keep in mind that retinoids can be irritating, so be wary and patch-test before applying. If you’re too reactive to retinoids pregnant and/or breastfeeding, or want another active to enhance your existing retinol, Dr. Chang also recommends peptides. These short chains of amino acids improve skin hydration and support collagen production, leaving skin feeling more firm and supple over time.

On the antioxidant side, vitamin C, and niacinamide also promote collagen production and reduce the oxidative damage that can break down the skin’s protein, leaving skin loose and crepey over time. Finally, "Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin, helping to plump and hydrate the skin to give a more youthful appearance," adds Dr. Chang.

The best ingredients may ultimately depend on your skin type. For instance, if your skin is dehydrated, consider using formulas with glycerin, squalane, or hyaluronic acid, whereas people with sensitive skin might want to use peptides instead of retinol.

What do dermatologists recommend for tightening skin?

If you want truly unmissable skin-tightening results, visit a board-certified dermatologist. There are two routes of tightening skin in the office: ultrasound and radiofrequency. These "stimulate collagen on a deeper plane to tighten and lift saggy skin more effectively," says Dr. Chang.

Dr. Woolery-Lloyd is a fan of Ultherapy, which "uses high-frequency ultrasound to tighten skin," she says. That ultrasound energy heats the very deep layers of skin, triggering the body's wound response. Meanwhile, radiofrequency devices, such as Thermage, also reach the deeper layers of skin, heating it to trigger new collagen production.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best skin-tightening creams, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from two dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

This fragrance-free formula pairs soothing feverfew (a herb that looks like a daisy) with nourishing oat to gently wash away dirt and buildup while helping protect the skin barrier. The texture starts light and creamy, then transforms into a soft foam that cleanses thoroughly without overdoing it. The result is skin that feels calm, cushioned, and comfortably hydrated long after you rinse.

Why it’s worth it: if your skin can’t make up its mind between dry and oily, CeraVe’s Foaming Facial Cleanser gets it. This crowd-pleasing formula strikes the rare balance of deeply cleansing without tipping skin into tight, squeaky territory. A trio of barrier-supporting ceramides (1, 3, and 6-II) helps keep skin strong and resilient, while hyaluronic acid pulls moisture to the surface. Niacinamide steps in to soothe and keep redness in check, making this a smart pick for combo, sensitive, or “it changes daily” skin types. The gel-to-foam texture lifts away excess oil, dirt, and makeup, leaving skin feeling clean and balanced.

Why it’s worth it: Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil feels almost too good to be true. The brand builds every formula around calming Centella asiatica (also known as cica) sourced from Madagascar, where the plant thrives in untouched conditions for maximum potency. The cleansing oil itself is incredibly lightweight, making it suitable for every skin type. Our oily, acne-prone editors love it, and Joyce Park, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Washington, calls it a favorite for her sensitive, rosacea-prone skin. “The cica is super calming, and the texture is delightfully light,” she says. True to Skin1004’s minimalist approach, the formula keeps it simple with just four oils—bergamot, sunflower seed, olive fruit, and jojoba—delivering gentle yet effective cleansing without any heaviness.

"I don't want to be dramatic, but this has capital-T transformed by cleansing routine. I got it in a set paired with the brand's Cleansing Ampoule Foam, but this is a non-negotiable first step for melting all of my makeup off before I go in with the lather. It has a generous slip, little to no scent, and a lightweight texture that's easy to emulsify and rinse. My only complaint is that I will need a jumbo size made." —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Packed with the maximum, over-the-counter dose of benzoyl peroxide (10%), which kills bacteria, unclogs pores, and reduces inflammation, this sudsy face and body bar is “highly effective for both inflammatory acne (red pimples) and comedonal acne (blackheads and whiteheads),” Kristina Collins, MD, a dermatologist based in Austin, told us. It also includes benzoyl peroxide and glycerin to soften and plump, so your skin isn’t left feeling stripped. “What makes this product unique is that it comes in a convenient bar format, making it easy to use on both the face and larger body areas like the chest and back,” says Dr. Collins. In fact, the PanOxyl Acne Treatment Bar won a 2025 Allure Best of Beauty Award for Best Body Acne Bar, so it’s a one-trick pony for all-over acne.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredients should you look for in a drugstore cleanser?

“Look for gentle surfactants, humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, and barrier-supporting ingredients,” says Dr. Shokeen. If you’re acne-prone, she says that salicylic acid can be helpful for light exfoliation. “If you have sensitive skin, make sure to avoid harsh sulfates, alcohol, and heavy fragrance.”

How do you know which drugstore cleanser is right for you?

To find the best cleanser for your skin type, Dr. Spearman recommends starting by identifying your skin type and primary concerns, such as dryness, acne, or sensitivity. “Read ingredient lists rather than focusing on marketing claims and look for fragrance-free formulas if you are prone to irritation,” she says. “When in doubt, keep it simple—a gentle pH-balanced cleanser used often will outperform more aggressive formulas.”

For our list of the best drugstore cleansers, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Great Eye Shadow Brushes Could Make All the Difference—Here Are Our Go-Tos

Image may contain Brush Device Tool Cosmetics Baton and StickCollage: Paula Balondo; Source images: Courtesy of brandsSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

The best eye shadow brushes don’t just make your makeup look better; they make the whole process feel easier, smoother, and way more fun. Even the most pigment-packed eyeshadow or creamiest cream formula can fall flat if you’re blending with the wrong tool, which is why pros obsess over brush shape, density, and softness just as much as they do color payoff. A great brush can sheer out a smoky eye, stamp pigment exactly where you want it, or melt multiple shades together so seamlessly you’d swear a makeup artist did it.

But here’s the thing: you don’t need a 30-piece kit to get there. A handful of thoughtfully designed brushes—a fluffy blender, a precise shader, and something tapered for detail work—can completely level up your routine. Whether you’re crafting a barely-there wash of taupe or going full “night out glam, these tools make every look feel effortless.

Why we love it: The MAC 217 is the gold standard of blending brushes. Soft, densely packed fibers are shaped into a gentle oval, giving you enough precision to hit the crease directly while still diffusing powder or cream shadows into the smoothest gradient. This pyramid-shaped brush is a miracle for eye shadow control freaks (guilty); the pointed tip only applies shadow exactly where you want it to go. It lets you carve out creases, define your eye shape, and get in that pesky undereye area without spreading shadow farther than desired. But despite its pointiness, the bristles are still soft as can be, so there are no streaks and no smudges—you can still blend things out to your heart's desire. Frequently Asked Questions

What should you consider when buying an eye shadow brush?

Gossman says size is most important when determining what kind of eye shadow brush you want. “I like smaller eye shadow brushes because you have more control,” she says. “Think of your eyes like a fine art painting—you would not use a giant fluffy blending brush to create the whole eye. Rather, an artist uses small brushes to define and create the look you want.” If you’re after a fluffy brush, for example, pick one that fits snugly into your crease for precise, controlled blending—not a giant brush that covers your entire lid and sacrifices definition.

How do you clean eye shadow brushes?

Gossman keeps it simple when it comes to cleaning her brushes. “I like to use Dawn dish soap and water rather than harsh cleansers because the chemicals are not safe around the eyes,” she says, adding that they also leave a film on the brushes. “Soap and water are always best, but make sure you squeeze out the extra water after washing your brushes so they dry more evenly.”

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide, inclusive shade range with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is the packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best eye shadow brushes, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete review process and methodology page.

12 Natural Bridal Hairstyles That Will Elevate Your Wedding Day Look

Lupita Nyong'o in a baby breath flower crownGetty ImagesSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

Growing up, whenever I envisioned my wedding day, I always pictured myself with long, flowy hair—the opposite of my kinky 4C coils. Wearing my natural hair in mini twists for my recent engagement, however, completely changed my vision. Not only did I feel confident in my natural texture, but I also felt completely myself—a feeling, I’ve found, is imperative to enjoying milestone moments. “Wearing natural hair [on your wedding day] can boost confidence and empower Black brides to feel proud of their cultural heritage and individuality,” says Keziah Jones, founder of Black-owned bridal makeup and hair company, Beyond The Knot Co. “Embracing natural hair on such a significant occasion can be a powerful statement of self-love and acceptance.”

The misconception that wedding hairstyles for Black women have to be long and straight is out. Now, brides-to-be can look to a vast list of textured hairstyle options that are beautiful and elegant enough for even the most momentous occasions. If you’re unsure how to start ideating your wedding hairstyle, Jones says to consider your hair texture first. “Black hair comes in various textures: curly, coily, or kinky. So choose a hairstyle that complements your natural texture and makes you feel comfortable and confident,” says Jones. For example, kinky type 4 coils may not lend well to a messy bun style like wavy type 3 curls would.

Also, think about the weather—depending on the season and location of your wedding, the climate may affect your hairstyle. “Humidity, wind, or rain can impact certain styles, so choose one that will hold up throughout the day,” says Jones. Lastly, the wedding outfit ultimately determines the hairstyle. “Your chosen hairstyle should complement the overall theme of your wedding and work well with your dress,” says Jones. “Doesn’t matter if it’s an updo, braids, twists, or a natural afro, make sure it harmonizes with your overall bridal look.”

Whether you want to let your Afro do its thing or are looking for a more structured style, the possibilities are just about endless. Below, discover bridal hairstyles that let your natural hair shine in all its glory.

    Classic Twist Out

Black bride with a natural hairstyleNichelle Bancey

You can’t go wrong with letting your curls out for your wedding day. Wearing your hair in its natural state practically guarantees you’ll exude confidence. If your hair is prone to shrinkage, try putting it in twists a few days before the wedding and unraveling them the morning of. If you opt for a twist out, braid out, or flexi/perm rod set to define your fro, New New York City-based hairstylist Monae Everett suggests reaching for the Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam, as it “provides a strong hold and does not flake.”

    Bedazzled Mohawk

Make a statement with this bedazzled mohawk style. Everett created this hair look using Dosso Beauty Kinky hair. “I divided the hair into sleek ponytails vertically down the head using the Design Essentials Max Hold Edge Control,” says Everett. To fashion the mohawk, Everett braided the length of each ponytail, before braiding all the ponytails together and pinning the ends. Use a tacky gel like the Got2B Glue Gel to attach rhinestones to the side of your head for a touch of sparkle.

    Baby’s Breath Crown

Lupita Nyong'o Baby Breath Flower Crown wedding hairstyleGetty Images

A short Afro adorned with a baby’s breath crown makes for an ethereal bridal hairstyle. The beauty of this look is its simplicity; it comes together quickly and easily. You can make a baby’s breath crown on your own, but if you don’t have a DIY spirit, Etsy has many whimsical options.

If your hair is too fine or short to secure accessories directly, Jones says wearing a headband as a base is the best solution. “You can attach flowers or other accessories to the headband for a stylish and secure fit,” says Jones. Opting for smaller headpieces will also help the style last all night. “Lightweight flower crowns or accessories won't weigh down your short hair and are easier to secure, making it less likely to slip or move around,” says Jones.

    Blonde Finger Waves

For edgy brides, a sharp style like Jodie Turner Smith’s platinum buzz cut with finger waves is a great way to go. This look requires minimal styling—perfect for a no-fuss bride—but the result is still stunning. “Smoothing your curls with pomades, mousses, and gels will help keep [the waves] in place as you style," Everett previously told Allure. She recommends using the Mizani Styling Foam (for its non-flaky hold) and Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel (to add moisture and hold).

Any natural hairstyle is made infinitely more elegant with dramatic baby hairs. Add dainty pearls between each swirl and you have a beautiful bridal hairstyle. To really let your edges shine, pull your hair back into a curly ponytail and carve out your baby hairs using a stronghold gel. I love the SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus + Flaxseed Edge Gel which will keep your edges intact from the ceremony to the end of the reception—without drying out your baby hairs or leaving any white residue.

    Flower Bun

Taraji P. Henson Met Gala flower bun wedding hairstyleGetty Images

Ever since Taraji P. Henson showed up to the 2024 Met Gala in this pink floral bun, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. This hairstyle wowed on the carpet, so you can imagine how stunning it would be coming down the aisle. Choose floral hair accessories that match the color palette of your wedding to tie everything together. Beyond The Knot Co. hairstylist Jenever Volf recommends using bobby pins to securely fasten the flower hair accessories to the bun. “Crisscross the pins for extra hold to ensure that the accessory stays in place throughout the day,” says Volf.

    Perfectly Messy Bun

This effortless curly bun would look gorgeous just about anywhere, but especially on your wedding day. The wispy tendrils falling out of the updo give it an undone vibe that would work well for a bohemian theme or add a relaxed element to a sleek or modern aesthetic.

When creating this style, Volf suggests starting with a strong ponytail base. “Make sure the ponytail is tight and secure to maintain the sleek look,” says Volf. Then, reach for a wand curler (we love the Pattern Beauty Interchangeable Curling Iron), using a ¾ inch barrel to create medium-sized curls before fashioning your bun. Then use a ⅜ inch barrel to create small curls that cascade down.

To get this style to last through all the festivities, you’ll need a lot of bobby pins and a generous spritz of hairspray. “A light-hold hairspray will set the style in place and ensure long-lasting hold throughout the day,” says Volf. We love the Bumble and bumble Does It All Light Hold Hairspray, which has oat and corn starch in the formula to help keep the hair from reacting to moisture while you dance the night away.

    Curly Ponytail

    Gabrielle Union Curly PonytailGetty Images

Gabrielle Union has been inspiring the girls with beautiful natural hairstyles for years, and this voluminous ponytail is one of my favorites, especially for brides. The slicked-back style allows your face to be front and center while the cascade of curls from the high ponytail add just the right amount of drama.

The For Kurls Drawstring Ponytail from Heatfree Hair is an easy way to achieve this look—just slick your natural hair into a high bun and attach the ponytail. For a sleek ponytail base, “brush your hair up using a boar bristle brush or a fine-tooth comb to ensure that your hair is smooth and free of any bumps or flyaways as you brush it up,” says Volf. Fluff out the ponytail extension for more volume and you’re ready to say “I do.”

This elevated twist on a braided ponytail was practically made for brides. To create this look Everett suggests first combing the hair back into a sleek ponytail and securing with a hair tie. “I'd add the Biolage Gelée Styler along the hairline to brush the ponytail in place,” says Everett. Then, she says to elongate the hair by braiding extensions into the natural hair. Add an elegant oversized bow at the base of your ponytail braid for a preppy finishing touch.

Take a page from Issa Rae's style book with this sleek afrocentric hairstyle. The flat twists going back diagonally, with the slicked back base, and the full afro in the back make this look ultra-detailed—there's a lot going on but it all works so well. And who wouldn't want to be this extra on their wedding day? Use a heavy-duty styling gel like the Got2B Ultra Glued Invincible Styling Hair Gel to slick your hair back half way.

If you don't have enough volume (or time) to create Rae's poufy afro, worry not—a kinky drawstring wig like the Kinky 3-In-1 Half Wig from Her Given Hair will suffice. Simply slick your hair back into a ponytail and attach the drawstring wig at the base, pulling the string as far as you need to and securing the clips to your hair to create a natural looking afro.

The advent of a new year doesn’t always call for reinvention. It's also a time to refocus and embrace what makes each of us unique and feels most authentic. When it comes to your nail color, that might mean finally discovering the nude polish that perfectly complements your skin tone, or leaning into your inner goth with a high-shine, patent-leather black manicure. It could mean indulging your romantic side with a rich, full-bodied red, or your spicy side with a zingy, hot-rod orange.

In a world where things can feel topsy-turvy, the best source for inspiration is often found through self-discovery—and that can start with a coat of nail polish. With guidance from top nail artists, we put together a menu of colors to cater to every side of you.

    Fresh Nude

Are you surprised? This nail trend has many aliases—“soap,” “lip gloss,” “clean”—but whatever you call it, the look isn’t going anywhere, and will likely get another rebrand in 2026. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “Nude nails will always be in style, especially after seasons of bright summer polishes and dark winter hues,” says Bana Jarjour, a Los Angeles-based nail artist.

This look gets its allure from being the wallflower of polishes. “Nudes don’t distract from the intricacy and details of clothes,” Jarjour explains, adding that the muted colors were all over the spring/summer 2026 runways. They were seen on models at Prabal Gurung, where Amy Ling Lin, founder of Sundays Studios, sent models down the runway in the sheer, rosy neutral No. 49; and at LoveShackFancy, where Miss Pop, a New York City-based nail artist, added a veil of Essie Liquid Sunrise over nude polishes for the show; and others too.

As for which polish to reach for, Jarjour recommends Essie Nail Polish in Skinny Dip if you have a fair or light-medium skin tone, and OPI Bare My Soul if you have a medium to deep one. If these polish options are not for you, we understand—picking your nude is very personal. Check out our list of the prettiest nude nail polishes for different skin tones.

    Fog Blue

Pinterest dubbed the color blue a trend to watch across beauty, fashion, and food in 2026. For nails, though, artists are torn over which shade will come out on top in the new year. Sojin Oh, nail artist and creative director at Kijibae, sees foggy blue on the horizon: “There is something meditative about gray-blue that reminds me of being in the Pacific Northwest,” she says. “It’s quiet, reflective, a bit calming, and while it’s moody, it’s not melancholic.” She adds, “With the year we had, this moody blue captures that feeling of both clarity and blurriness.”

She points to Kijibae’s Foggy Semi-Cured Gel Nail Strips, which are translucent, semi-cured gray-blue. We like Cirque Colors in Navy Jelly to achieve a similar effect with a polish. For a more opaque take, we recommend the OPI Nail Polish in Alpaca My Bags.

Jarjour and Sarah Chue, a Los Angeles-based nail artist, agree that a medium-wash denim blue will be popular, likening it to a go-to basic in your wardrobe. “This shade works like a neutral alternative for many outfits, but with more personality,” Chue says. “It has a refined, sophisticated edge, but is still wearable every day.”

She suggests Dior Nail Polish in Denim—a medium-dark jeans-colored crème formula—topped with a shiny topcoat. We also like the Lights Lacquer Nail Polish in Mr. Darcy, which is slightly grayer.

Extra-glossy black lacquer is going to dominate the feeds in 2026. “The return of quiet luxury and ’90s minimalism is inspiring darker, more refined tones that balance edge with elegance,” says Jin Soon Choi, a New York City-based nail artist and founder of nail-care brand JinSoon. She recommends its Nail Polish in Absolute Black.

If you’re looking for under-$20 options, we like the creamy Mooncat Nail Polish in Emo For Life and Essie Nail Polish in Licorice. Mazz Hanna, a Los Angeles-based nail artist and founder of Nailing Hollywood, a boutique nail artist talent agency, is a fan of Gelcare’s Patent Leather Black, a longer-lasting option (that requires you have an LED lamp to cure it). “It gives the exact kind of high-shine, mirror finish,” she says.

Maybe it's all the romantic book-to-film adaptations or all the seductive visuals that took over runways—either way, we’re expecting burgundy to burst through our screens in 2026. “As fashion leans toward classic tailoring and timeless beauty, deep reds match the mood—romantic, confident, and polished,” says Choi.

Burgundy is particularly versatile, she adds: “A glossy crème look invites depth, while a matte finish looks luxe and vintage.” She references her brand’s polish in Audacity. We also like the full-bodied OPI Infinite Shine Nail Polish in Malaga Wine.

A darkskinned model wearing pink blushHeather HazzanSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

Finding the best blushes for brown skin comes down to tone, texture, and technique. On deeper complexions, seemingly safe shades for fairer skin, such as soft pinks, pale peaches, and dusty roses, often disappoint—turning ashy, vanishing on impact, or sitting visibly on the skin's surface. So, what lives in richer, bolder territory? For starters, reds, berries, terracottas, hot pinks, and warm corals that echo how melanin-rich skin naturally flushes. But pigment is only half the equation: The formula determines whether a blush actually delivers. Creams and liquids can help anchor pigment and prevent the first-swipe fade, while powders require a finely milled texture and higher pigment loadings to avoid chalkiness and to actually show up.

Don’t forget: Application matters just as much. Layering, strategic placement, and using the right tools can mean the difference between a vibrant, skin-like flush and a look that disappears by midday. We know this involves plenty of trial and error, so we're helping you skip it. With insight from professional makeup artists and Allure editors, we’ve rounded up the best blushes across creams, powders, balms, and liquids that consistently deliver without caking or fading.

Why we love it: If you want intense color, Danessa Myricks’ Yummy Blurring Balm Flushed earns its keep fast. This hybrid balm-powder formula delivers rich pigment with a soft-matte payoff that blurs the look of pores and smooths uneven skin. The texture starts creamy and then sets down into a blurred finish. The rich Red Velvet shade is especially strong here; it’s a true, blue-leaning red that shows up immediately, then builds cleanly. You can sheer it out for a flushed effect or layer it into a saturated statement cheek. That versatility comes down to the formula: Upsalite does the heavy lifting by absorbing excess oil and sweat while maintaining hydration, which is why the finish stays soft-focus instead of cakey. Olive-derived squalane and hyaluronic acid keep the formula flexible, allowing it to move with the skin rather than sit on top of it.

"No Danessa Myricks slander will be tolerated in my presence! Especially when I am wearing the Blurring Balm Flushed. As someone born in the '80s, blush is something I can't live without. This one has an Allure Best of Beauty award, and I personally lobbied for it because it's the only cream formula that I trust. It applies like a cream but dries down with the staying power of a powder. The pigment is powerful, not splotchy. It feels silky on the skin, not cakey. This Primadonna shade works on most brown skin tones, from caramel to coffee. One warning: If you are prone to blush blindness (like me), use a light touch. An overzealous hand can leave you looking like Ziggy Stardust." —Jessica Cruel, editor in chief

“Most cream blushes either fade too fast or take too much work to blend, and this one doesn’t. The Haus Labs Blush Balm Stick goes on in one swipe for me, then melts into my skin so I can sheer it out or build it without disturbing the rest of my makeup. It feels genuinely hydrating and keeps my cheeks looking smooth and dewy while still wearing well throughout the day. I also love the travel-friendly tube, it feels luxe, sturdy, and easy to toss in my bag for touchups or for a flush of color across my lips. Rhode

Why we love it: The Rhode Pocket Blush stands out for its buildable application across different skin tones. The cream formula allows you to add color gradually and diffuse as needed for either a bolder look or a natural flush. Tiller says it’s also “easy to reapply throughout the day, and it works well on top of your powders.” The application is intentionally simple, and it can also be used on the lips for a monochromatic moment. “I love to apply this with my fingertips. It leaves you with just enough of a sheer glow,” he says. On brown skin, that sheer-to-buildable payoff shines in shades like Toasted Teddy, a bronzy terracotta that adapts across undertones, and Date Cake, a toasted berry shade that looks rich and multi-dimensional.

I love how the dark terracotta shade complements my skin tone and gives me a pretty, sun-flushed look. Plus, the creamy texture is easy to blend out, and the pocket-size stick makes it great for on-the-go application.” —Annie Blay-Tettey, associate beauty editor

The lightweight texture melts into skin, allowing pigment to be built or sheered out without patchiness. Tiller is unequivocal, saying it’s “easily one of [his] favorite cream blush options.” “Shade Flaming Red is the G.O.A.T., in my opinion, of blushes for brown skin,” Tiller adds. “Whether you have a lighter tone or you’re deeper, this will look gorgeous on you.” Achieving a natural-looking finish requires just a dot of product, while the brand's Micro-fil technology ensures even color that takes you from day to night—no reapplication needed.

“I’ve always shied away from red blush, as it can quickly look intense. (There’s a fine line between a sexy, demure flush and looking like you’re performing at a kid’s party with a squeaky red nose.) But this blush changed my mind about fiery tones. Yes, it’s pigmented (so applying it gradually is key), but it blends beautifully into a natural-looking ‘I just had a really great date’ kind of flush. It sets in place for hours, too—lasting through that date and whatever might follow.” —Jesa Marie Calaor, senior editor

    Alessandra Foresto

Why we love it: Finding a matte blush that doesn't go ashy or flat on deeper skin is tricky, but the Tower 28 GetSet Blur + Set Matte Powder Blush delivers long-wearing color without the chalky finish. This Best of Beauty-winning pressed powder behaves more like a setting powder than a traditional blush, depositing color exactly where the brush lands and diffusing seamlessly as you blend. The blush formula is breathable, smoothing the look of pores while keeping the finish soft. Built-in shine control from kaolin clay keeps the color looking intentional all day, while squalane prevents the dryness matte blush is notorious for. For deeper skin tones, Samo Spritzer offers a muted rosy mauve that sculpts without dulling the skin, while Feliz Fresca delivers high-impact pink pigment that stays saturated all day.

Why we love it: Jones Road’s The Best Blush in Berry succeeds where many blushes fail on deeper skin: It balances undertones beautifully and blends seamlessly. This talc-free powder delivers a berry-pink flush that mimics the look of real skin warmth. The pigment appears immediately on medium to deep complexions but builds gradually, making it easy to control the intensity. The finely milled texture blends seamlessly into the skin, diffusing edges without dulling the shade or clinging to texture. This is thanks in part to squalane in the formula, which helps the powder melt into the skin, keeping the finish smooth and comfortable throughout the day.

Why we love it: Color payoff is a non-negotiable when it comes to deeper skin tones, and Juvia’s Place Blushed Duo in Vol. 1 delivers immediately—no heavy layering needed. The pigment shows up on first contact and stays true as you blend, and both shades are intentionally saturated, so you get richness and depth without having to overwork the product. What makes this duo especially effective is how the two tones interact: The deeper berry brings depth, while the terracotta shade adds lift and warmth, allowing you to customize payoff depending on how bold or sculpted you want the cheek to look. Even as you build, the pigment remains clean and dimensional instead of turning muddy or flat.

Why we love it: Layerability is what makes this blush duo especially effective on deeper complexions. “Patrick Ta Blush Duos are one of my favorite picks not only for the formula but also for the packaging,” Jordon Tiller, a makeup artist based in NYC, says.” The dual-format compact allows you to build pigment in controlled layers, starting with cream for adhesion and finishing with powder for longevity, which helps prevent ashiness and uneven payoff.

“Start with your cream product to perfect your base, and top it with the powder. Both formulas pack a punch with a beautiful blend,” Tiller adds. Shade-wise, he notes that She Left Me On Red works especially well on deep skin with yellow or golden undertones, while She’s A Doll is a bright, neutral-leaning pink that blends seamlessly into deeper complexions, including neutral and olive undertones.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are certain textures, such as creams, gels, or powders, more reliable for deeper skin tones?

“Cream formulas are my favorite to use on deeper skin tones. The blend is unmatched,” says Tiller, who points to their flexibility as the biggest advantage. “I love that you can choose whether you really want to build up pigment or sheer it out based on application.” That adjustability is key for deeper complexions, where highly pigmented blush needs to diffuse smoothly without latching onto texture or disappearing as it’s blended.

What shade families do you recommend for brown skin?

“I personally love red-family shades on brown skin,” says Tiller. “A lot of clients get scared when they see a color that striking, but it’s such a versatile shade.” On deeper complexions, red-based blushes tend to enhance warmth and dimension, rather than compete with undertones or fade away during blending. When sheered out, they can mimic a natural flush, and when built up, they hold their saturation without turning ashy—which is why they’re often more reliable than lighter pinks that can skew chalky.

What’s the best way to apply blush to get maximum color payoff on deeper skin tones?

“Layering is key for maximum payoff as well as staying power,” Tiller explains, emphasizing technique as much as product choice. “For cream products, I will go in with my favorite MAC 130S brush to apply or a Beautyblender,” he says, before reinforcing the color. “Top it with a little translucent setting powder, and then top off with a powder [blush] formula.” This method anchors pigment to the skin so it doesn’t fade or shift throughout the day. He also recommends mixing tones for added dimension, noting that “if I use a red tone blush as cream for my base, I will top it with a pink powder to merge everything for a seamless blend.”

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best blushes for brown skin, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Why we love it: Barefoot Dreams’ CozyChic Robe might just be the softest thing our editors have ever tried on. It’s made from 100% polyester microfiber (the same plush material as the brand’s popular CozyChic Throw), so slipping it on basically feels like wrapping yourself in a blanket—only this one has sleeves, loops, and a tie, so it stays put while you shuffle around your apartment. It’s on the thicker, weightier side, which is exactly why we reach for it the moment temps drop (so, it may not be your best bet for summer). However, it will stand the test of time: One Allure editor has had hers for four years and swears it’s still just as fluffy as it was when she bought it, washing and drying without ever losing that signature cloud-like feel.

If there's ever a time to go all out with sparkly, shiny fingertips and toes, it's the holidays! Just ask Demi Lovato, whose multicolored, gem-studded “modernist holiday” manicure looks straight out of a retro celebration.

Lovato's nails were the work of her go-to nail artist, Natalie Minerva, and were reminiscent of “vintage Christmas lights." We absolutely see the vision; there's something very mid-century modern about the gemstones' color and shape, like those old-school bulb lights blinking on a beautifully decorated tree or along the edge of a rooftop.

To start, Minerva shaped the musician's nails into soft, medium-length almonds, then applied OPI's Bare My Soul, a sheer nude, as the neutral base. Atop that, she placed a handful of multicolored gems in various shapes and sizes, including long rectangles and teeny circles in shades of blue, red, smoky purple, and teal. Each nail was home to anywhere from two to four gems in varying placements. The manicure is definitely glittery, twinkly, shiny, and sparkly, but it's also pretty subtle and doesn't feel too holiday-coded; you could easily wear it for New Year's Eve, on vacation, for a wedding, or whenever you want to take a simple manicure up a notch or three.
